Birthdate & Privacy Settings
The Family Directory allows you to store birthdates for family members while giving you full control over how much of that information is visible to others. These settings help protect privacy while still supporting features like birthday reminders and the Family Calendar.
Where Birthdate Privacy Is Used
Birthdate privacy settings affect two areas of the site:
- Family Directory — Controls what other family members can see on a person’s profile.
- Family Calendar — Controls whether a birthday appears on the shared calendar.
Birthdate Privacy Options
When adding or editing a person, you can choose from several visibility options:
- Show Full Birthdate
Displays the full date (month, day, and year) on the person’s profile.
- Show Month & Day Only
Hides the birth year for privacy while still showing the birthday.
- Hide Birthdate in Directory
The birthdate is stored internally but not shown on the person’s profile.
- Show in Calendar
Adds the birthday to the Family Calendar using only the month and day.
- Hide from Calendar
Prevents the birthday from appearing on the shared calendar.
Even if a birthdate is hidden from the Directory or Calendar, it is still stored securely and can be used for automated birthday emails.
How Birthdates Appear on the Calendar
Birthdays shown on the calendar always use the format:
- Name + 🎂 icon
- No birth year is ever displayed
This keeps the calendar clean and protects personal information.
Why Birthdate Privacy Matters
Birthdates are sensitive personal information. These privacy options allow each family member to choose how much they want to share while still enabling helpful features like:
- Birthday reminders
- Automated birthday emails
- Family Calendar visibility
Editing Birthdate Privacy
You can update birthdate visibility at any time by editing the person’s profile. Changes take effect immediately in both the Directory and the Calendar.
